Things to Use:
Incorporate centers (bookmaking) into the lesson
Different versions of the same story, illustrations
Venn diagram to make explicit the similarities/differences between two texts
Adults probably get deeper than kids would--so good element for workshop for adults
Use story we're familiar with--so we can go deeper both with analysis and the creation of our own story
Multiple extensions
Great element to show children's performance--and make concrete a culminating activity
Power of collaborating with colleagues
Performance includes high frequency words
Really rich stories
Use different versions of stories in secondary classes too (usually theme across different texts)
College--differences in Arthurian legends
Use with Claudette Colvin: book and play version; repeated readings deepens understanding
Use picture books to teach science concepts, too--perhaps incorporate writing assignments with this
Use as prelude to understand repetition in more sophisticated works, too (MLK, "I Have a Dream" speech)
Possible adjustments:
Maybe find different cultural adaptations for older kids
Jump into activity--push rationale to the end
Flash standards maybe at first but don't read through until end (if at all)
High frequency words--show us how this works
Do storyboard first or mention that she has a staple remover and removes and adds new pages when necessary
